Tools of the Trade: Blending the Old and the New

See All Stories

Goldsmiths use a variety of tools to perform their daily tasks, and they are often the same tools that have been used for centuries. This is especially the case at Jeff Johnson & Company where many of our tools have been passed down from generation to generation. For instance, Jay Walker still uses a pair of pliers that he’s had since he was 14 years old. Rich Adams works with a hammer that once belonged to his grandfather. And many of Jeff Johnson’s tools have been used for three generations. There’s a lot to be said for the older tools and their ability to help complete the task.

New Technology

Nevertheless, new technology is always welcome, and we embrace new tools that have proven their worth by helping us create a superior product for our customers. At Jeff Johnson & Company, we are fortunate to have a Rofin 60-Watt YAG Laser Welder. This state-of-the-art welder offers several key benefits, especially when working with platinum jewelry.

In the past, we had to use a natural gas and oxygen torch when working on a piece of platinum jewelry. The melting point of platinum is approximately 3,215 degrees Fahrenheit, and the high temperatures forced us to either remove the stones, which is risky, or protect the stones by placing them in water. But capillary action pulled the water around the shank and cooled the weld.

Thanks to the laser welder, we no longer have to remove stones or use water to cool them during the welding process. We can now hold the piece in our hands while fusing pure platinum, which leaves no seam for sizing or any other repair or design process.

At Jeff Johnson & Company, we love to work with our older tools, but we’re equally excited about the newer technology. Together they make it possible to offer unique jewelry pieces that are carefully crafted and designed to meet the needs of our clients.
